On Tuesday 26th August Nathan and I walked 90 minutes to a bar that was holding a social event for people who talk different languages. On arrival you were given stickers to show what languages you could speak! So I wore my Union Jack proudly and kind of stuck my Argentinian flag lower so people might not see it. Nathan and I got 2 pints of beer at the bar and looked around....and looked around....and looked around! So basically we people watched, it was mostly Argentinian men and a handful of American girls and boys and it was either the Americans just hanging out with each other or the Argentinian men trying to get as many American girls numbers as they could in the space of a few hours! We enjoyed ourselves watching the craziness around us unfold but we didn't actually talk to anyone.
We decided to attend the same event the following evening but in a more local bar in Palermo the neighbourhood we are living in, about a 40 minute walk. We decided to have a bottle of Malbec in a bar nearby as we were about 45 minutes early for the event. We had such a good time chatting to each other that by the time the bottle was finished we were now 45 mins late so decided to order another bottle of the Trapiche Origen Malbec (mendoza 2013) ($72 peso) and stay put.
Ok so our Spanglish classes this week have not been successful, we will try again next week, but Nathan is still using his Spanish a lot with the people we are staying with and also out and about in the city. I can order my food as obviously that is important to me!
Talking about food, I spoke to my family on Viber this week (which was lovely as I miss them a lot) and they have just got back from a holiday in Crete. I said to my mum 'How was your holiday?' And in the next breath I said 'What was the food like' to which she replied 'Victoria you are obsessed with food!' This is a very true statement I really am obsessed with food!!! I can't remember exactly when it started but I feel working as a waitress in Simply Blues definitely played a part in me appreciating food and then my summers in America also. I am fascinated by the different ways in which people around the world eat, what they eat and the culture around dining. I also realised that when I book a flight I don't start researching the museums, the monuments, the mountains I can climb I start researching the food I am going to eat and the best places to eat it. The sightseeing fits in around my 3 meals a day!
This year in January Hannah and I joined slimming world and I loved it. I got to sit around for a few hours and discuss what I ate all week and listen to others talking about what they ate. I found the whole thing fascinating! I'm not sure that is what the inventors of slimming world were going for when they came up with the AA style help group but it's awesome! I read the book cover to cover and found it so interesting what foods you could eat so much of and where I along with many others go terrible wrong, my short conclusion being white bread! Anyway my friends are just as obsessed with food as I am, Hannah, Laura and I especially. If I look back through our whatsapp messages there are photos of food an conversations about food and descriptions of wanting food. So I have realised that anyone reading this blog will probably get a 10 month run down of what I have eaten!
So keeping with the theme let me tell you about last night we went to a little place called Club Eros which is completely locals only! No English speakers, no English menu and I loved it! The restaurant is attached to a football pitch where the locals play 5 a side and the customers are about 85% men and 15% women! So for £16 we had a sirloin steak each, chips to share, a bottle of Malbec, a sparkling water and of course tipped! Amazing!
